Gravel: The Evolution of Concrete Through Time
It’s compelling to see how time makes a mark on surfaces. Small imperfections, exposed aggregate and subtle nuances in texture give a material character that feels genuine rather than manufactured. Gravel translates that concept into porcelain, drawing its inspiration from the slow transformation of concrete and the way surfaces weather and evolve over time. Instead of a uniform representation of concrete, Gravel explores the different levels of natural depth and texture, resulting in a collection that feels familiar and considered, but refined in its design.
Gravel is available at Julian Tile in three distinct expressions, each telling a different surface story of weathered concrete.
Small
Small is the most restrained expression of the collection. Its surface features fine, compact graining with a subtle character, recalling an earlier stage in its journey, before significant wear and aggregate begin to emerge. Its quiet appearance creates a soft and understated foundation for the design.
Large
Large takes the material a little further, with a more weathered surface and visible stone aggregate emerging across the tile. The added variation gives it more depth and character, while still keeping the overall look understated and refined.
Gem
Gem brings a more decorative expression to the collection, pairing a geometric pattern with the softer concrete-inspired surface. Marble-effect inserts create contrast and rhythm, adding a graphic element while keeping the overall look grounded and cohesive.
The different expressions make it easy to create contrast without bringing in another material. Small keeps things quiet, Large brings more of the aggregate through, and Gem adds a more graphic element. Put them together and the collection starts to feel much more layered and considered.
What makes Gravel interesting is that it doesn’t try to keep concrete perfectly uniform. It embraces the changes that happen over time.
